- Notes: The patient's face has been heavily burnt and disfigured by a bomb during the
- war. Even with the use of the strongest sedatives, he affirms to regularly endure severe
- pain from the wounds, as if "the flames are still burning under the skin", he says.
- Examinations of the cicatrized tissues show no trace of inflammation, infection, or swelling.
- Scars are clean. Could it be a case of persisting nerve damage? The patient never ceases
- to blame himself for his disfiguration. Could it be a case of "guilt of the survivor"? Phantom
- pain manifesting as a punishment for not dying with his comrades?
